#18-26 Jawambe Means Tell Me – Janet Mirobi learned unfeminine work
Janet Mirobi was among the first female taxi drivers in Mombasa on the Kenyan coast. Six years later she illegally boarded a ship and that changed her career and life. Now she owns a hotel. She tells WINGS Kenya correspondent Diana Wanyonyi how she and other women who entere the taxi business in Mombasa shrugged off male drivers’ interference; how she used her contacts from ships in the port to learn multiple languages; how she was stowed away on a ship and learned to crew, while keeping her new occupation from her parents; and how she used her seafaring earnings to open first a pub in Mombasa and then the Jawambe Hotel. She also gives her philosophy on how to interact with customers.
